Survival Guide: Entertaining a Toddler When You Feel Like Absolute Garbage

There are two types of moms:

  1. Pinterest moms

  2. “I have a headache and if you ask me one more question I might dissolve into the floor” moms.

Today, we are thriving in category #2.

This is your no-pressure, minimal-effort, sit down and survive guide to keeping your toddler entertained while you mentally clock out but physically remain present.

1. Educational TV That Buys You Peace (and Zero Guilt)

Let’s just start here—because sometimes survival > screen time debates.

  • Throw on Signing Time! and call it a learning experience.

They’re picking up signs, you’re picking up the will to continue. Everyone wins.

This is one of my favs and has helped my toddler learn sign language while still being fun and is hosted by a Ms. Rachel, so you know its good, lol.

Pro tip: Sit nearby, nod occasionally like you’re engaged. That counts.

Other honorable mentions for our house

  • Trash truck

  • Puffin rock

  • Daniel tiger

  • Bear in the big blue house

2. Bubble Guns = Effortless Joy

If you don’t own a bubble gun yet… this is your sign.

  • They can operate it themselves

  • It keeps them moving

  • You can supervise from a chair like the royalty you are

  • If your inside the bubbles do count as soap and your floors are getting mopped if you put towels under your Toddlers feet (argue with someone else, it counts on days like this).

It’s basically outdoor/indoor entertainment with zero instructions required from you. A rare gem.

3. Easy Puzzles (AKA Independent Play for 7 Glorious Minutes)

We’re not doing 100-piece puzzles today. Respectfully, no.

Think:

  • Chunky toddler puzzles

  • Matching shapes

Anything they can mostly do without you being summoned every 12 seconds

Will they still call you over? Yes. But slightly less.

4. Water Coloring Books (Mess-Free = Mom-Friendly)

Whoever invented these deserves a hug.

  • No paint

  • No cleanup

  • No “oops I colored the wall” situation

Just hand them the water pen and let them go to town while you stare into the void peacefully.

5. Reusable Sticker Books (A.K.A. Time-Consuming Magic)

Toddlers + stickers = unmatched focus.

Reusable sticker books are elite because:

  • They can peel and restick endlessly

  • No commitment, no damage, no chaos

  • Buys you actual quiet time (rare, sacred, beautiful)

6. The “Looks Educational” Win: Matching Letter Games

Enter: Melissa & Doug alphabet puzzle

  • Pictures spark vocabulary and letter-sound connections naturally

  • Only one match per letter

  • Educational and fun

something enriching… while doing absolutely nothing.

We love a productive illusion.

7. Bonus: Lower the Bar (Seriously)

This is not the day for:

  • Structured activities

  • Sensory bins you saw on Instagram

  • Being the “fun mom”

This is the day for:

  • Surviving

  • Hydrating

  • Letting your toddler have the extra snack

Final Thoughts from the Couch

If your child is safe, occupied, and only mildly sticky… you’re doing amazing.

Motherhood isn’t about perfection.

It’s about finding ways to function when you feel like a soggy piece of bread.

If you made it through the day without hiding in the pantry… honestly, growth.
