Is your little one screaming hours on end for seemingly no reason? Or maybe they kind of resemble the exorcist, and you’re scratching your head over what’s causing the fuss? Milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI) might be the sneaky culprit. It’s not just a mouthful to say, it’s a common food sensitivity in infants and toddlers that can cause a lot of discomfort. It was honestly the culprit of me feeling like I was losing my sanity on multiple occasions, and if I'm being really real it's why I hesitate to have any more kids. Because boy did it rock my sleeping and waking world. This post will help you spot the signs, what helped give us relief, and discover MSPI-friendly snacks and swaps, all while keeping things light with a few tired mom jokes. Because let’s face it, parenting is hard enough without the mystery of mysterious tummy troubles. I will also preface this with saying I am in no way shape or form a doctor and always advocate for doing your own research and consulting a trusted professional.
What Is Milk Soy Protein Intolerance?
Milk soy protein intolerance is a reaction some babies have to the proteins found in cow’s milk and soy products. Unlike a full-blown allergy, MSPI is a sensitivity that can cause digestive upset and other symptoms but usually doesn’t trigger life-threatening reactions.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
Recognizing MSPI can and often is detective work, but here are a few signs/symptoms:
Frequent gas and bloating
Your baby might seem uncomfortable or if their like mine scream bloody murder randomly for hours, be inconsolable and then abruptly stop. Or as my ped so sweetly put it look like the exorcist.
Diarrhea or constipation
Mucus or blood in their poop, or a change in bowel habits.
Vomiting or spitting up
Are you even a mom to a newborn if you don't have at least one spit up stain on your shirt?
Skin reactions
Rashes, eczema, or hives.
Irritability and poor sleep
I get it, and yes a lack of sleep is normal, but newborns should still be mostly sleeping (14-17 hrs per day), personally my kiddo slept but tossed and turned and woke up constantly.
Poor weight gain
If your baby isn’t growing as expected, it’s worth investigating.
Excessive baby acne
This one helped my pediatrician diagnose my newborn by 3 weeks. I brought it up every appt, asking is this normal and by week 2 she agreed, it was not.
If you notice these symptoms, keep a detailed diary of how they react, how often, and remember if you can safely, pics and videos are worth 1000 words. This information will be invaluable when you talk to your pediatrician.
How to Help Relieve Gas and Discomfort
This one was our biggest battle and one of the most common complaints with MSPI, and it can make everyone in the house a little cranky. Here are some tip/tricks:
Burp frequently during and after feeds
Try tummy massages
A gentle clockwise rub can help move gas along or I love you massages.
Use warm compresses
This is a link for the one my sister sent after my many tears and complaints, she used it on her kiddo too
Adjust feeding positions
Keeping your baby upright during and after feeding helps digestion.
Gas relief meds
I will preface that this was and is the game changer for us, i endured for several months because fear and mom guilt about giving my sweet newborn ANYTHING ate at me before I tried this and of course pestered my ped about its safety. But it was what truly worked and made the difference for us especially in the detox era of mspi.
Remember, every baby is different. What works for one might not work for another, so patience is key. And there is no better advice I can give than utilizing your village if you're lucky enough to have one. There were times we were all in tears for hours and thankfully I had someone close I was able to call just to hold them while i broke down. because this is hard and you're entitled to admit that. And you know what my kid finally went to sleep within 12 mins of that helpful hero.
MSPI-Friendly Snacks and Everyday Swaps
Once MSPI is suspected or diagnosed, avoiding milk and soy proteins becomes a priority, and good Lord is it in everything. I myself had been pescatarian in my pregnancy, so I hadn't had dairy in years, nor gluten much to my utter disliking. So I had lots of experience in navigating limited diets and snack changes suddenly but this was still a doozy, so I've complied lists and links to my favs and now my toddlers favs and also made a list of things to be leery of because frankly there wasn't alot of advice our ped could give us and drs usually asked me what mspi is.
Snack Ideas
Fresh fruit slices & veggies
..
Homemade oat muffins
Use oat flour and substitute milk with safe alternatives like oat here is my personal fav.
Veggie chips
Check that the chips doesn’t contain soybean oil, as different brands use different things.
Made good products
They make crackers and cookies, etc. and are also sold at target and most Walmart's.
Everyday Swaps
| Common Item ---MSPI-Friendly Alternative and my personal favs linked
Cow’s milk --- Oat milk, coconut milk, rice milk, almond milk
Soy/dairy based formula --- Hydrolyzed or amino acid formula (some wic programs even cover this with dr proof)
Yogurt --- Coconut yogurt or other dairy-free options
Cheese --- Nutritional yeast or dairy-free cheese
Soy sauce --- Coconut aminos or tamari (gluten-free soy sauce, this one's my fav, and if
you're reading this y'all should sponsor me because I get 4 bottles a month minimum lol).
Traditional butter --- Plant based butter
Always check labels carefully. Many processed foods contain hidden milk or soy proteins. The detox process is said to be approximately 6 weeks, and if you're breastfeeding that includes you and your milk. One slip means starting those weeks over so please make sure to check and inform all caregivers of how detrimental it can be. And always pack extra snacks.
MSPI -things to watch out for
I saw a slight difference at week 5 of the detox process before finding some surprise sources no one really talked about unless you were 3 pages deep on some long dead reddit page. So here are a few things I've learned to be careful of that are not normally mentioned.
Hygiene products
Yes, you read that right, I found soy listed in toothpaste, hair care products, and sunscreen so please always double check that label.
Poultry
After having limited success after the full 6 wks. I went back to the pediatrician to ask what else could be done, but alas there wasn't anymore advice they could give me. So, after many nights researching I found out that some kids are so sensitive that the soy fed to chickens, pigs, turkeys, etc. can affect them. Unfortunately, after emailing many grocery store chains and manufactures I wasn't very successful at finding an affordable solution. They do have companies that sell soy free poultry, it just wasn't affordable for us at the time.
Gum and breath mints
pre & postnatal vitamins
I've linked the two brands I've used and trusted thus far, since having to switch below.
Chocolate
Alot of chocolate brands can contain soy lecithin, so be wary.
The Diagnosis Journey: Why Persistence Pays Off
Getting a clear diagnosis for MSPI isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes, you have to bring up your baby’s symptoms multiple times before your pediatrician connects the dots. It can feel like you’re stuck on repeat, but persistence is important.
Keep detailed notes on symptoms, feeding, and any changes you try. This helps your doctor see patterns and make informed decisions. If you feel your concerns aren’t being taken seriously, don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. I personally have a great ped who knew the symptoms, but I still took my little to an allergist on my own accord for extra advice and confirmation at 5 months, and no referral, so you do have alternative options if you so choose.
You are not alone!!
Shockingly this is not as uncommon as it once was, and I have had two other friends both have babies also diagnosed. It's hard and can feel very lonely but moms are literal superheroes and thankfully most kiddos do grow out of this by about 3. I can confirm my kiddo had an allergy test re done at about 2 yrs and 8mths and was cleared for soy and dairy(yay!! I can eat chicken again!!) (unfortunately we traded for fish and peanuts, but c'est la vie). Since this has become less common i can also say there are way more resources online including support groups online, which can help validate all the feelings that go along with this journey. Sending so much love to all you fellow mspi parents, the journey is hard but you're not alone and our littles are so worth it.
